Amazon Shortens Voluntary Return Guarantee to 14 Days Across Major Categories

The End of the Voluntary 30-Day Guarantee

Amazon is making a significant shift in its marketplace return standards. Effective September 1, 2026, the e-commerce giant is officially phasing out its long-standing voluntary 30-day return guarantee across multiple product segments. Going forward, customers purchasing items in these groups will only be covered under the mandatory 14-day statutory right of withdrawal.

Immediate Action Required for Compliance

To ease the transition, Amazon is extending a temporary grace period through October 1, 2026. However, online merchants should not delay their compliance efforts. Legal advisory groups—such as Germany’s Händlerbund—have already issued warnings urging sellers to audit and update their terms, conditions, and store policies immediately to avoid expensive cease-and-desist claims from competitors or consumer rights bodies.

Scope and Affected Product Groups

The shorter return timeframe applies universally to all sellers on the platform, whether they manage order fulfillment independently or rely on Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). The affected segments span a broad cross-section of consumer goods:

  • Home & Living: Furniture, Garden, Home & Garden, and Garden & Leisure

  • Personal Care & Family: Baby Products, Beauty, Luxury Beauty, and Drugstore & Personal Care

  • Consumables: Food & Beverages, Wine, and Pet Supplies

  • Tech & Gear: Mobile Electronics, Musical Instruments & DJ Equipment, Suitcases, Backpacks & Bags, and Tires

  • Commercial Goods: Accessories for Trade, Industry & Science

A New Competitive Differentiator for Sellers

While the baseline platform standard drops to two weeks, e-commerce retailers retain the right to offer a longer voluntary return window independently. For sellers looking to stay competitive, retaining a 30-day return policy could become a powerful marketing tactic to stand out in categories where buyers expect extra flexibility.
