Online Retailers Must Introduce Mandatory “Withdrawal Function” by June 2026

The European Union has introduced new rules strengthening consumer protection in ecommerce, requiring online retailers to implement a mandatory electronic “withdrawal button.” The measure forms part of the implementation of Directive (EU) 2023/2673 and will soon require businesses selling online within the EU to enable customers to withdraw from contracts through a clearly accessible digital function.

What Is Changing?

Under the upcoming legislation, ecommerce businesses must implement a dedicated “withdrawal function” on their websites. This feature will allow customers to formally declare their intention to cancel a purchase through a structured online statement.

The withdrawal tool must be easy to find and clearly labeled — specifically with the wording “withdrawal from the contract.” Visibility and accessibility will be key compliance requirements.

What Information Must Be Collected?

When using the withdrawal function, customers must be able to submit:

  • Their name

  • A clear statement declaring withdrawal

  • Details identifying the relevant contract or order

  • Instructions on how they wish to receive confirmation

After entering the required information, the customer must be able to finalize the process via a confirmation button (e.g., “confirm withdrawal”).

Immediate Confirmation Required

If the withdrawal option is provided online, the retailer will be obligated to send immediate confirmation of receipt. This confirmation must include the exact date and time the withdrawal notice was submitted.

Importantly, consumers will be considered to have exercised their right of withdrawal within the legal timeframe if they submit their notice before the deadline expires.

Important: IT Adjustments Must Be Completed in Time

Businesses must ensure that all necessary technical updates are fully implemented by 18 June 2026, one day before the regulation becomes applicable.

Authorities responsible for consumer protection are expected to actively monitor compliance. While retailers still have time to prepare, early planning and coordination with IT teams is strongly recommended to avoid last-minute implementation risks.
