TikTok Shop expands cross-border selling between the EU and UK

TikTok Shop is preparing to expand cross-border ecommerce between the European Union and the United Kingdom. Sellers based in eight EU countries will soon be able to offer their products to British shoppers, while UK-based merchants will gain access to consumers across continental Europe.

The move further strengthens TikTok Shop’s position in the European ecommerce market. The platform has expanded into several new European markets in recent years, including Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. Its wider Sell Across Europe initiative has effectively created a pan-European marketplace, allowing merchants to reach customers in 12 European countries and adapt product listings for different markets.

EU sellers gain access to UK shoppers

Under the new cross-border program, merchants in Belgium, Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain will be able to sell directly to customers in the UK.

TikTok Shop has operated in the British market for almost five years and has attracted more than 300,000 small businesses. The international expansion will begin with a pilot involving selected EU sellers on 21 September, before becoming more widely available from 19 October.

There is, however, an important difference in how deliveries to the UK will be handled.

Sellers must arrange UK shipping themselves

EU merchants selling to British customers will be required to use the Ship by Seller option. This means the merchant is responsible for choosing and paying the courier and dealing with delivery problems if something goes wrong.

TikTok Shop also requires participating sellers to already operate on the platform in an eligible EU market. Their accounts must be in good standing, have recent sales activity and not carry a significant outstanding negative balance.

UK sellers can also expand into Europe

The expansion will work in both directions. TikTok Shop plans to allow eligible UK merchants to sell their products to customers in the 12 countries covered by the Sell Across Europe network.

Access will not automatically be granted to every seller. TikTok Shop says eligibility will be assessed based on the merchant’s current account status and performance.

The new cross-border options could give established TikTok Shop sellers a relatively straightforward way to reach customers beyond their domestic market, while further turning the platform into a European-wide marketplace rather than a collection of separate national markets.
